Computers are devices made for low dust environments. So obviously, lots of dust is bad for them. Most computers do not come with dust filters so almost all the dust in the area is drawn into the computer case. When dust gets inside the case, it coats the components with a film or layer of dust and this causes the computers to operate above the preferred 75 degree mark for optimal speeds. Seasonal annual cleaning should be done to prevent damage to your system. In some cases, like in industrial environments more is needed.

Other harmful situations that dust can be linked to is premature failure of optical components like DVD Drives or CD Drives. These drives are built with Optical lenses, motors, and servos that rely on dust free light paths for the laser-light to function properly. To much dust can cause them to not properly read the data from disks.

Short Circuits when the humidity changes can be linked to dust as well. The dust takes more of a hardened form and allows current to arc across connections.

The most damaging is the extra heat that is caused by the dust. To much dust traps heat inside the case and ultimately will slow the system down or shut it down because of unsafe situations will cause the system to stop running.

For all these reasons, you should definitely put your computer on a service schedule for cleanings to keep it running in optimal form and prevent any sudden losses.
